Ghumphir

घुमफिर · wandering about

Ghumphir is a free browser game for wandering the Kathmandu Valley. Kathmandu, Lalitpur (Patan), Bhaktapur and Boudhanath are built as small hand-drawn worlds from open map data, so every lane, temple and shop sits where it really is. Walk the bazaars, climb the stupa, ride a tempo, and watch the city change from dawn to night.

Where the map comes from

Streets and buildings come from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL) and Overture Maps. Landmark descriptions are summarised from Wikipedia. Monuments are modelled by hand from public references and street-level imagery, and checked against current photos of each street.

What we are working on

Making every street look the way it does today: building heights, old brick and new concrete, shopfronts and signs. We use openly licensed street-level imagery (such as Mapillary) to check facades along the routes, and we welcome photos from people who walk these lanes.

Open data

The map data used in the game is derived from OpenStreetMap and remains available under the Open Database Licence. Engine based on Sakura Crossing (MIT licence).
